Debt is a fact of life

Sadly, debt is a common fact of life these days; no wonder, when credit is so easily available and even encouraged (with the advent of student loans, young people are starting their working life with thousands of pounds of debt). Psychologically, we are also encouraged to buy, buy, buy and worry about the consequences later. Eventually, though, that moment of worry will come, when you start to wonder how you can possibly make the payments. Don´t panic though, as there are answers.

In certain circumstances, debt can actually be a positive thing. It will enable you to buy a house; few people are cash buyers, unless they have already sold a house and have the proceeds sitting snugly in the bank. Although it is still difficult, the key is to buy what you can afford, and not take on a massive mortgage that may be affordable on your current salary, but not if circumstances should change or your mortgage rate goes up. Also, have enough savings to cover yourself if you do lose your job.

Suppose that you find yourself in debt with loans and credit cards, and no idea of how you are going to pay it off. The first step is to admit that there is a problem; the second is to seek help. Panicking won´t help; getting advice from a debt agency will. Organisations like the CAB will help you deal with creditors, work out an affordable repayment plan, and give you a lot of reassurance that there is a way out.
